Matt Buhr is currently a band director in the Quincy Public School System and a proud graduate of the University of Iowa (UIowa) holding degrees in trumpet performance and music education. Buhr's teaching responsibilities include directing high school and junior high concert bands, marching and pep bands, jazz lab band, show choir band, and teaching fundamentals of music theory. Outside of his daily rehearsals, he also enjoys teaching over 20 students in his private lesson studio.
Buhr has adjudicated several high school band programs in the Midwest and served as a show choir choreographer, clinician and judge for both junior high and high school competitions. Additionally, he has assisted nationally recognized choreographer Nancy Bocek with show choir and musical theater productions since 2014.
At UIowa, Buhr excelled under the teaching of Amy Schendel, D.M.A. as a member of a studio trumpet quartet that placed as a competing ensemble at the International Women’s Brass Conference (IWBC). He lead the trumpet section of the 250-member Hawkeye Marching Band, was principal trumpet of the concert band and a member of UIowa’s renowned Johnson County Landmark (JCL) jazz band. Buhr was also the choreography captain for UIowa Dance Club and music director of UIowa Intersection A Cappella group.
Outside of his school responsibilities, Buhr performs as a freelance trumpet player with Quincy’s Big River Swing Machine and Quincy’s Community Concert Band. When he’s not tooting his own horn, you can find him playing disc golf or riding his motorcycle.
